Great thread!

GD Official Anthology (circa 1984), the band discusses this very subject. The idea was not to include lyric sheets with the albums in the hope that the audience would hear the lyrics each in their own way ("Sometimes the songs that we hear..."), a lot like people interpreting instrumental passages in different ways.

Hunter"s and Barlow"s lyrics tend to be so universal in meaning that misinterpreting them almost seems irrelevant.

Know exactly what you mean AshesRising, when running through Hunter's web site for the first time last fall i was shocked at how many discrepancies i happened across.

The one that took me most by suprise was hearing "storm and rain..." in the Bird Song for twenty some odd years then finding out it was supposed to be "snow and rain..."(one of my fav of all Garcia-Hunter, the song that sunk the hooks into me half way through the 1st set of my 1st show)

Also cool to see Hunter's original draft copies of some of his songs, ("Wharf rat down in the docks by the city..."),

Are some of the corrections in different hand writing Garcia's by chance?

i just had a great one with 'Let it Grow'.
i always thoguht it said "she's PROUD as the bank where she kneels down to gather her water"
apparently (at least according to rukind.com) it says "she's BROWN as the bank..."
i still like my version more...

I always thought the line in Althea was
"I told Althea I was a Rogue inside,"
As a matter of fact, I still sing it that way when I play Althea on my guitar.

For Althea, I thought it went...

"I told Althea, I was born to be a bachelor"
"Althea said ok, that's fine, you know, now I'm gonna try and catch ya" (meaning she wants to catch him)

but its really

"I told Althea, I was born to be a bachelor"
"Althea said OK, that's fine"
(and now jerry says) "you know, now I'm gonna try and catch ya"

big diff

midnight sun:
I think those are Hunter's notes on "Wharf Rat."

Check out the lyrics at the top of "Comes a Time" It has the additional lyrics that Jerry sang only once or twice(?) in 1971:

http://www.dead.net/RobertHunterArchive/files/HandwrittenLyrics/ComesaTime.html
"And the words come out/like an angry stream/
hear your own voice say/things you could never mean
When the heat cools down/ and you find your mind
Got a lot of words/you got to stand behind..."
Then look at the next verse that is crossed-out; appears to be a love song (at least in part) -- AshesRising

"Some rise, some fall, some climb, some crawl.."-AshesRising
